The beauty of the islands of the Aegean Sea conceals their economically precarious situation. Each of these islands has had to live off its own resources, off its land, orchards and flocks, and if this was not possible the island was forced to open up to the outside world. This is the case of Symi, where, thanks to the boom in navigation at the beginning of the new\u00a0<\/em>millenium, the tourist industry has rapidly developed, and the hemmorhage that has been draining island of its population has been stopped. Yet this new prosperity is not without danger: although Symi has for centuries resisted belligerent hordes, the peaceful invasions of tourists is undermining the very essence of the island, leaving only a shell.<\/em><\/p>\n
