For a long time, mountains have been looked upon as flaws of the creation. They must wait for the end of the XVIIIth century to be considered with more amenity. The life of the mountain people is a constant struggle against the cold, the snow and the heights. The slope and the climate impose a specific agricultural organization: at the bottom, the fields occupy the less abrupt slopes; then come the pastures, situated at half-slope; finally, there are the woods which are topped by high\u00a0<\/em>mountain pastures. In order to exploit these resources at best, the flocks go up and down according to the season . With the industrial Revolution, mountain agriculture cannot struggle against a mechanized plain agriculture anymore. Together with carrying its inhabitants to the plain, the railway opens the mountain to visitors. The mountain dwellers become hotel keepers or guides. The competition is fierce with those coming from outside who covet these \u00abnew lands\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n
