“What does Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani mean?” Marta asks an elderly priest. “Those are the words that Jesus cried: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” The words resound within Marta. Marta observes her native town of Calabria having recently returned there with her mother and sister after growing up in Switzerland. Being thirteen, she feels like a stranger in this devastated corner of southern Italy. She is now old enough to be confirmed and joining a catechism class is the best way to try to fit in. However, far from her “celestial” dreams, she merely discovers the little compromises made by the community.
