LANDSCAPES: “ISTANBUL”

TURKEY  •  28′

a movie by JEAN LOïC PORTRON

Enclosed by the sea and situated where Europe and Asia meet, Istanbul has always naturally drawn man, his products and ideas to its arms, the obligatory point of passage between the East and West. Until the discovery of the Americas, the empire, wether Byzantine or Ottoman, united the Far East, Europe and Central Africa. Nothing happens without the empire’s consent; it is the go-between. For a very long time largest city of Europe, Istanbul shrunk as the Ottoman empire atrophied, not to wake up until the 50’s, and then quite brutally : in 40 years’ time, its population has increased nine-fold. The capital of sultans, the city of mosques, is now knee-deep in urban problems, facing traffic jams and a lack of roadways, housing shortages, etc.
