For a long time, sugar cane was the island’s principal resource, it was at the heart of the countryside. Today, everything has shifted. The centre has become peripheral. The beautiful, the useful is no longer the plantation, the fields of cane but the beach or the mountain summits which at tract increasing numbers of tourists. But once again, the inhabitants look on as spectators to the transformation of their island.
