THE VIRGIN MARGARIDA

MOZAMBIQUE •  86′

a movie by LICINIO AZEVEDO

Mozambique, 1975. After 500 years of Portuguese colonization, Mozambicans hoist their flag for the first time. Those who fought for independence are in power and apply their revolutionary ideals. Prostitutes must be “reeducated” and transformed into “new women” to serve revolution. Hundred of women, prostitutes or presumed prostitutes, are arrested. Amongst them, Margarida, a teen age peasant girl, arrested for not having any identification document. The women are taken to an isolated location. The long cohabitation between guards and prisoners, in complete isolation, brings them to the discovery of their own humanity. And to the conclusion that they are all prisoners of a system they do not understand. On occasion of the visit of the military commander who has the power to free Margarida, the women decides to free themselves.
